Nelson Piquet Souto Maior ( Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈnɛwsõ piˈke], born 17 August 1952) is a Brazilian retired racing driver and businessman who won the World Drivers' Championship three times in the years 1981, 1983 and 1987 .
After winning twice in 1990 and once the next year he left Formula 1 racing at the age of 40, though he wasn't yet finished with motorsport. An attempt to qualify for the 1992 Indianapolis 500 ended in the worst accident of his career, leaving him with badly crushed lower limbs.
