I can think of a dozen novels offhand that end with death and destruction and hopelessness, books that track a downward spiral and leave a reader there. There’s nothing wrong with books like that.
If you want a happy ending, try A. A John and ... Eventually they die. This is the end of the story. B Mary falls in love with John but John doesn’t fall in love with Mary.
