One particular image got super popular for this purpose: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/KnR6AfOhy8M/hqdefault.jpg. It became basically THE image to use and the meme became known as duckrolling someone. Then, with the advent of early YouTube, this morphed into Rick rolling as it basically exists today.
On a response to a question asking if Rick Astley was truly the real person, which the answer was yes, u/TheMalleableDuck responded with a fake message stating he met Rick backstage and provided a link of a supposed picture but led to a rick-roll.
Initially, Astley, who had only recently returned to performing after a 10-year hiatus, was hesitant about using his newfound popularity from the meme to further his career, but accepted the fame when he rickrolled the 2008 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with a surprise performance of the song.
