Chuo University (中央大学, Chūō Daigaku), commonly referred to as Chuo (中央) or Chu-Dai (中大), is a private research university in Hachioji, Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 1885 as Igirisu Hōritsu Gakkō (English Law School), Chuo is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in the country.

Chuo University has six campuses in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. The Tama Campus is surrounded by the lush greenery of suburban western Tokyo; the Korakuen Campus, Ichigaya Tamachi Campus, Myogadani Campus, Surugadai Campus and Koishikawa Campus are conveniently located in downtown Tokyo.
Since its founding as the English Law School 137 years ago, Chuo University has evolved into one of the most prestigious universities in Japan, with eight faculties, eight graduate schools, and two professional graduate schools, in addition to nine research institutes, and it has produced a great number of outstanding graduates.
Chuo University was first founded in Tokyo in 1885, and was originally known as the English Law School, owing to many of the university’s founders having studied at the Middle Temple in London. The university was later renamed Chuo University, Chuo meaning middle in the Japanese language.
