Ōtāhuhu is a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand – 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) to the southeast of the CBD, on a narrow isthmus between an arm of the Manukau Harbour to the west and the Tāmaki River estuary to the east.
Occupies the narrowest point in New Zealand, the 1-km strip between the Tāmaki River and the Manukau that Māori used as a canoe portage. Ōtāhuhu began as a military settlement, from which the Pākehā invasion of Waikato was launched in the 1860s.
Ōtāhuhu / Mount Richmond [1] is volcanic peak and Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountain) in the Auckland volcanic field. A group of scoria mounds up to 48 m high, it has two 50 m wide craters. It was the site of a pā , and retains some Māori earthworks from that time such as kumara pits and terracing.
