Pickens County was created, in 1820, from shared Choctaw, Chickasaws, and Creek hunting grounds. Pickensville, on the Tombigbee River, is home to one of the last steam-powered sternwheeler on southern rivers, the U.S. Snagboat Montgomery. The vessel is open for tours at the Tom Bevill Lock and Dam.
