El Filibusterismo, also known by its English title The Reign of Greed, is the second novel written by Jose Rizal and the sequel to Noli Me Tangere. Published in 1891, it continues the Noli's criticisms of the abuses and corruption perpetrated by the Spanish government.
These were the Noli me tángere (or Noli), first published in Berlin, Germany in 1887, and its sequel El filibusterismo (or Fili), which came out in Ghent, Belgium in 1891.
El Filibusterismo (The Subversive) is the second novel by Jose Rizal (1861-1896), national hero of the Philippines. Like its predecessor, the better-known Noli Me Tangere, the Fili was written in Castilian while Rizal was traveling and studying in Europe.
Rizal’s novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, were so popular that neighbourhoods would bury the censored texts in gardens (Craig, 1913, p. 185). The ruse was so elaborate that when the books were being removed from the garden to be read, a dance would be used to distract the rare few informants (Craig, 1913, p. 185).
