George Peter Alexander Healy (July 15, 1813 – June 24, 1894) was an American portrait painter. He was one of the most prolific and popular painters of his day, and his sitters included many of the eminent personages of his time.
George Peter Alexander Healy was born in Boston on July 15, 1813, the first of five children of William Healy, an Irish immigrant and captain of a merchant vessel, and his wife Mary Hicks. Healy showed an early artistic interest: by 1830 the self-taught painter had opened a portrait studio from which he hoped to help to support his family.
George Peter Alexander Healy knew he wanted to be a painter when he first used a paintbrush at the age of sixteen. He opened a studio in Boston, but despite having his name and profession on the door “in very big letters,” did not receive any commissions and couldn’t pay his rent.

George P. A. Healy American. 1842. Not on view. Euphemia Van Rensselaer (1816–1888) was the daughter of Stephen Van Rensselaer (see 54.51) and the sister of Alexander Van Rensselaer (see 61.70). She was born on the family manor, Rensselaerswyck, near Albany, New York, and inherited a portion of her father's vast estate in 1839.
