The Serengeti ( / ˌsɛrənˈɡɛti / SERR-ən-GHET-ee) ecosystem is a geographical region in Africa, spanning the Mara and Arusha Regions of Tanzania. [1] The protected area within the region includes approximately 30,000 km 2 (12,000 sq mi) of land, including the Serengeti National Park and several game reserves. [2]
The Serengeti is well known for the largest annual animal migration in the world of over 1.5 million blue wildebeest and 250,000 zebra along with smaller herds of Thomson's gazelle and eland. [2] The national park is also home to the largest lion population in Africa.
