Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington, KG, PC (1618 – 28 July 1685) was an English statesman. A supporter of the Royalists during the English Civil War, he joined the royal family in exile before returning to England at the Restoration in 1660.
Henry Bennet, 1st earl of Arlington was the secretary of state under King Charles II of England from 1662 to 1674 and a leading member of Charles’s “Cabal” ministry. Besides directing foreign policy for 12 years, Arlington, by creating the nucleus of a “court party” (the future Tories) in the House.
He contrived Charles's first secret treaty of Dover with Louis XIV in May 1670, was granted a barony in 1665 and promoted to an earldom in 1672. Disgraced as secretary in 1673, Arlington became an Admiralty commissioner, and assisted in withdrawing the garrison at Tangier.
Biography. Bennet was educated for the Church, though at Oxford he appears to have occupied himself chiefly in the study of Latin poetry and the composition of English verse. In 1643 he entered the service of the secretary of state, George Digby (later 2nd Earl of Bristol).
