Erik Samsel Kristensen (March 15, 1972 – June 28, 2005) was a lieutenant commander of the United States Navy SEALs who was killed in action during Operation Red Wings. He and several other SEALs set off as part of a search and rescue mission, hoping to assist a four-man SEAL team that was engaged in a firefight with Taliban fighters.
Erik S. Kristensen was a lieutenant commander and a SEAL Team TEN officer who died in a helicopter crash in 2005 while trying to rescue a recon squad. He received the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart posthumously for his service and sacrifice in the Global War on Terror.
On that tragic day, on June 25, 2005, Lt. Commander Erik S. Kristensen rushed with his fellow Navy SEALs to help other Navy SEAL heavy outnumbered in Afghanistan mountains and pinned down by concentrated enemy small-arms fire. His courage and the courage of his fellow SEALs will never be forgotten. He is buried in the Naval Academy Cemetery.
