History. The Prater was once imperial hunting ground and only accessible for the aristocracy, until the Austrian Emperor Josef II donated the area to the Viennese in 1766 as a public leisure center.
As co-regent of Maria Theresa, Emperor Joseph II opened the Prater as a recreation area for all inhabitants of Vienna on April 7, 1766. Only the rearmost part, the so-called Hirschau, remained in imperial possession and was used for breeding deer, noble and fallow deer.
