Gabriel Leuvielle [1] [2] (16 December 1883 [3] [2] – 1 November 1925), known professionally as Max Linder ( French: [maks lɛ̃.dɛʁ] ), was a French actor, director, screenwriter, producer, and comedian of the silent film era. His onscreen persona "Max" was one of the first recognizable recurring characters in film.
Max Linder was a French actor, director and writer who pioneered the style of silent slapstick comedy. He was the highest-paid film star in the world before World War I, but his career declined due to health problems and competition from Chaplin and Keaton.
Linder started out as an actor in the French theatre, but after making his screen debut in 1905 he quickly became an enormously famous and successful film comedian on both sides of the Atlantic, thanks to his character "Max," a top-hatted dandy.
