About Petipa. Victor Marius Alphonse Petipa was born in Marseille, France on the 11th March 1818. His parents were Jean Antoine Petipa (1787-1855), a renowned Ballet Master and teacher, and Victorine Grasseau-Maurel (1794-1860), a tragic actress and drama teacher, both of whom were employed in Marseille at the time.
