Takeshi Mitarai (御手洗 毅, Mitarai Takeshi, 11 March 1901 – 12 October 1984) was one of the founders of Canon Inc. He established Canon in 1937 along with Goro Yoshida, Saburo Uchida and Takeo Maeda.
In 1942, Takeshi Mitarai (1901 – 1984), a friend of Saburo Uchida, became president of the company. Although he was an obstetrician by profession, Mitarai had long been an enthusiastic supporter of Uchida since the early days of Precision Optical Industry Co., Ltd.
The company was originally named Seikikogaku Kenkysho, meaning Precision Optical Industry. The start-up was founded by Takeshi Mitarai, Goro Yoshida, Saburo Uchida and Takeo Maeda. The idea was to make finest optical instruments.
