Apr 28, 2016 · Ric Smith is a Fellow of the AIIA and former diplomat who served in New Delhi, Manila, Tel Aviv and as ambassador to China. He was also Secretary of the Department of Defence and Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Mr Smith served in Australia’s diplomatic missions in India, Israel, The Philippines and Hawaii. He was a Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 1992 to 1994, and Deputy Secretary of the Department of Defence in 1994-95.
Mr Smith is Chair of the RAND Corporation’s Australian Advisory Board. He is a visiting Fellow at the Lowy Institute and at the Australian National University, and has been Co-Chair of the Australian Committee of the Council for Security Cooperation for Asia and the Pacific (CSCAP) since 2017.
Ric Smith has served as Australian ambassador to Indonesia, secretary of the defence department and special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
