May 8, 2020 · Yellow Earth is a 1984 debut film by Chen Kaige, based on a folk song about a girl who committed suicide rather than marry an older man. The film, set in 1939 Shaanbei, depicts the lives of peasants and a Communist soldier, and challenges the social realism of the time with its ambiguous and artistic style.
'Yellow Earth' focuses on the story of a communist soldier who is sent to the countryside to collect folk songs for the Communist Revolution. There he stays with a peasant family and learns that the happy songs he was sent to collect do not exist; the songs he finds are about hardship and suffering.
An early scene in Chen Kaige’s 1984 debut film Yellow Earth finds a young Communist official engaged in a debate about arranged marriage with an elder.
