Jun 6, 2024 · Tabla, pair of small drums fundamental (since the 18th century) to Hindustani music of northern India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The higher-pitched of the two drums, which is played with the right hand, is also referred to individually as the tabla or as the daya (dahina or dayan, meaning “right”).
The foundation, created in 1992, by Rupesh and Mona Kotecha honors the memory of twin brothers, Pandit Ravi & Shashi Bellare, who were the first to introduce the tabla duet, the Tabla Jugalbandi, to Indian audiences as early as the 1940's. Both were world class performing artists.
