Background. In 1971, producer Robert Evans offered Towne $175,000 to write a screenplay for The Great Gatsby (1974), but Towne felt he could not better the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. Instead, Towne asked Evans for $25,000 to write his own story, Chinatown, to which Evans agreed.
Jun 20, 1974 · Truly deserving of its title as one of the greatest films of all time, Chinatown delivers in spades. Everything about the film shines, and it looks better now than it probably did in 1974; of course, there's a lot of junk in the theaters these days. Acting, cinematography, script, atmosphere, it's all 10s baby.

Jun 2023. We visited from the U.S. and enjoyed walking around Binondo (Chinatown). There were many shops to pop into and some great restaurants/food stands scattered throughout as we wandered the streets. We had an informal guide which was helpful (it was our driver from Carlines, Marlon, who was exceptional).
