David Newman (February 4, 1937 – June 27, 2003) was an American screenwriter. From the late 1960s through the early 1980s he frequently collaborated with Robert Benton. He was married to fellow writer Leslie Newman, with whom he had two children, until his death in 2003 from a stroke.

David Newman, a screenwriter who was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the initially controversial “Bonnie and Clyde,” has died at the age of 66.
Newman was best known as a screenwriter, especially for his film credit for the landmark 1967 movie Bonnie and Clyde. A graduate of the University of Michigan , he earned his bachelor's degree there in 1958 and a master's degree the following year.
