James Biddle (February 18, 1783 – October 1, 1848), of the Biddle family, brother of financier Nicholas Biddle and nephew of Capt. Nicholas Biddle, was an American commodore. His flagship was USS Columbus.

James Biddle, 1783–1848, U.S. naval officer and diplomat, b. Philadelphia. He became a midshipman in 1800. At the beginning of the War of 1812 he was first lieutenant on the Wasp; he later commanded the sloop Hornet. Sent out in the Ontario in 1817, he took formal possession of the Oregon country for the United States in 1818.
By 1778, the Continental Navy was in its third year of action in the Revolutionary War. Of all its captains, Nicholas Biddle was the one whose star shone brightest. Only 27, he was already a skilled sailor and respected officer, with enough courage to supply a fleet. Both his talent and drive were honed by necessity.
