Monmouth, city, seat (1831) of Warren county, western Illinois, U.S. It lies about 60 miles (100 km) northwest of Peoria. Established in 1831, it was named to commemorate the Battle of Monmouth (New Jersey) fought during the American Revolution (June 28, 1778).

History. Monmouth was founded in 1831. The land where the town was established was given to a soldier as payment for service in the war of 1812. The unlucky soldier lost his claim in a poker game to a plantation owner from Tennessee named John Talbot, who became the first settler of monmouth.
