Perservering in his research with a keen eye to detail, Blumentritt was considered the foremost Filipinologist in Europe, although he never really visited the Philippines. Ferdinand Blumentritt (1853-1913) was an outstanding scholar from the small Bohemian town of Leitmeritz in then Austria-Hungary. He was the closest foreign friend of the Philippine national hero José Rizal and is still the most important symbol in the bilateral history between Austria and the Philippines and beyond, between the Philippines and Central Europe.
