Clifford „Cliff“ Robertson wurde in San Diegos Stadtteil La Jolla geboren. Er begann seine Karriere als Filmschauspieler Mitte der 1950er Jahre. Als Darsteller für schwierige Charaktere wurde er oft in Hauptrollen besetzt, ohne jedoch je in die Riege der ganz großen Stars Hollywoods aufzusteigen. 1968 gewann er als bester Hauptdarsteller in der Daniel-Keyes-Verfilmung Charly einen Oscar.
