Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) was a civil rights activist. Along with A. Philip Randolph, he organized the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom of 1963. Rustin assisted in the founding of the Congress of Racial Equality in 1942. He was a strong believer in the nonviolent tactics of Gandhi, and he counseled Martin Luther King, Jr.

Bayard Rustin Education Complex provides courses in rich Liberal Arts program and humanities for 9th grade students. The Medical-Math Institute is also a special option as well. Students learn from a challenging and nurturing environment in which to test their abilities, make explorations and discoveries, construct meaning, and to make achievements that they can be proud of and celebrate.
This building was originally the Textile High School, then the Straubenmuller Textile High School, then the Charles Evans Hughes High School, before eventually assuming its current title as the Bayard Rustin Educational Complex. It is now an NYC “vertical campus” housing several smaller schools.
