Henry Koster was born Herman Kosterlitz in Berlin, Germany, on May 1, 1905. His maternal grandfather was a famous operatic tenor Julius Salomon (who died of tuberculosis in the 1880s). His father was a salesman of ladies unmentionables who left the family while Henry was at a young age, leaving him to support the family.
His name "Americanized" to Henry Koster, the young director was signed by Universal. The Koster-Pasternak team took a chance on a teenaged soprano named Deanna Durbin, and the result was the Koster-directed Three Smart Girls (1936), the first in a steady stream of enormously popular Durbin musicals which saved Universal from bankruptcy.

Biografia. Henry Koster era encara jove quan el seu pare, un venedor, va marxar de casa. Es va conformar per acabar els seus estudis secundaris a Berlín escrivint novel·les i realitzant còmics. Koster va descobrir molt aviat el món del cinema quan el seu oncle, cap a 1910, va obrir una sala de cinema a Berlín.
