Keawakapu has been our favorite beach since first visiting Maui a decade ago. Never crowded, the surf is usually pretty calm and the views are amazing. You see turtles on almost every visit and you get whale sightings during season.

Extending from south Kihei to Wailea’s Mokapu Beach, Keawakapu is set back from the main road and less visible than Kihei’s main roadside beaches just north. It’s also less crowded, and is a great place to settle in and watch the sunset. With its cushion-soft sand, Keawakapu is also a favorite for sunrise yoga and wake-up strolls.
Keawakapu Beach has a rich history, and efforts have been made to protect it from erosion through the construction of a sea wall. The beach also has significant cultural significance, with the name ‘forbidden cove’ implying that it may have been kapu (sacred) to prevent Hawaiians from settling on that section of shoreline.
Jul 15, 2017 · Another one of the more popular beaches that Maui has to offer, Keawakapu is a great beach on the southwestern side of Maui in between Kihei and Wailea. From here, you’ll get a nice view of Molokini , Kaho’olawe and the West Maui Mountains and during the right time of the year, you’ll have front row seat to the majestic antics of Maui’s bi-yearly visitors, the humpback whales.
Starting at Keawakapu Beach (photo at right), you can walk for about an hour to the South along the sand and on beachfront paths, in front of multi-million-dollar homes, and past half a dozen beautiful resorts in Wailea.
