Punahou’s rich history dates back to 1795, when the lands of Kapunahou were passed on by Kamehameha and eventually given to Hiram Bingham, one of the School's missionary founders. The School opened on July 11, 1842, and over its nearly 180 years, has educated generations of students and had a place in Hawai‘i’s history.

From 2018 – 2021, Punahou was recognized annually as one of the top 10 High School Athletic Programs in the nation by MaxPreps, a digital source of high school sports owned by CBS Interactive, a division of CBS Sports. Additionally, in 2022, MaxPreps ranked Punahou the top high school athletics program in the nation over the last two decades.
