Pope Leo XIII is known for composing his famous prayer to St. Michael the Archangel, as well as an exorcism prayer. For over a century, Pope Leo XIII’s prayer to St. Michael was recited after each Low Mass.
Surely, this scene was very present to Pope Leon XIII, when, at the end of the previous century, he introduced to the entire Church a special prayer to St. Michael: ‘St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil….
This prayer to Saint Joseph was composed by Pope Leo XIII and was promulgated in his 1889 encyclical, Quamquam Pluries. This is the same pope who composed the well-known prayer to St. Michael the Archangel (“defend us in battle…”).
