Negros Oriental (Cebuano: Sidlakang Negros; Tagalog: Silangang Negros), officially the Province of Negros Oriental (Cebuano: Lalawigan sa Sidlakang Negros; Tagalog: Lalawigan ng Silangang Negros), is a province in the Philippines located in the Negros Island Region.
Negros Oriental is a province in the Philippines situated in the Central Visayas region occupying the central section of the Visayas. Its capital is the City of Dumaguete. The province has a land area of 5,420.57 square kilometers or 2,092.89 square miles. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 1,432,990.
After the Spanish colonization of the Philippines, the island of Negros was divided into the provinces of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental by a royal decree executed by Governor General Valeriano Weyler on January 1, 1890. Dumaguete was also made the capital of the new Negros Oriental Province.
On May 29, 2015, President Aquino III signed Executive Order 183, merging the two Negros provinces into one region — the Negros Island Region. It separated Negros Occidental and its capital Bacolod from Western Visayas (Region VI) and Negros Oriental from Central Visayas (Region VII), raising the total number of regions of the Philippines to 18.
