Jun 24, 2019 · Fernando Amorsolo, the first National Artist of the Philippines for painting, grew up during a time of transition for the country. Amorsolo and his mother moved to Manila and lived with his uncle, Fabian de la Rosa, a painter.
Amorsolo painted many series of historical paintings depicting pre-Colonial, Spanish colonial, and wartime events, portraits of prominent politicians (e.g., General Emilio Aguinaldo), nudes, andthe dalagang Filipina (a tanned, clear-complexioned, slim, and soft-featured Philippine maiden).
Tragedy struck early in Amorsolo’s life. One night, when Fernando was still very young, his father was awakened by shouts coming from outside his window. It was the head of the revolutionary movement fighting against the Spaniards demanding that Amorsolo’s half brother, the eldest son Perico, join the group.
One of his most famous paintings is Mango Gatherers (oil on panel), which sold for the highest auction price of $882,252. Other notable works include The Rice Planting, Afternoon Meal of the Rice Workers, and La Barca de Aqueronte.
