Born in Sydney in 1964, Peter Sharp graduated with a bachelor's degree in Art Education and a Post Graduate Diploma in Painting in 1987 at the City Art Institute (later Sydney College of Advanced Education). He completed a Master of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales, College of Fine Arts in 1992.

He went on to study a Bachelor and then a Master of Fine Arts at University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts (now UNSW Art & Design). He is currently represented by Sydney gallery Sullivan+Strumpf.
