The revenge of the forty-seven rōnin (四十七士, Shijūshichishi), [2] also known as the Akō incident (赤穂事件, Akō jiken) or Akō vendetta, is a historical event in Japan in which a band of rōnin (lordless samurai) avenged the death of their master on 31 January 1703. [3] The incident has since become legendary. [4]
The temple is famous for its graveyard where the "47 Ronin" (also known as Akoroshi, the "masterless samurai from Ako") are buried. The story of the 47 loyal ronin became highly popular as a kabuki play during the Edo Period (1603-1868) and remains very popular today.
