St. John of the Cross, born as Juan de Yepes y Álvarez, was a Roman Catholic saint who was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation. He was also a renowned mystic and a Carmelite friar who is considered, along with Saint Teresa of Ávila, as a founder of the Discalced Carmelites.
John of the Cross OCD (Spanish: Juan de la Cruz; Latin: Ioannes a Cruce; born Juan de Yepes y Álvarez; 24 June 1542 – 14 December 1591) was a Spanish Catholic priest, mystic, and Carmelite friar of converso origin. He is a major figure of the Counter-Reformation in Spain, and he is one of the thirty-seven Doctors of the Church .
Saint John of the Cross was beatified by Pope Clement X in 1675, and Canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726. He is the patron of Contemplatives, mystics and Spanish poets and his feast day is celebrated on December 14.
