I don't have any documentary historical evidence to back this up, just my intuition, but it seems quite natural that people would think of an illicit lover as dominating (domina + ing) her boyfriend through her seductive powers.

What would link them to rhetoric would be the intention to deceive an audience. The sort of phenomena are hard to define as a single class of language use or rhetoric. Think of photographs.

Perhaps, being more puritanical over here, people want to avoid inadvertently giving the impression that they are having an affair with a business contact. Or it was an effect of the movie "Dangerous Liaisons." I dunno.
