Tyne Dock is a neighbourhood within the town of South Shields, Tyne and Wear, on the south bank of the River Tyne. It takes its name from the large dock on the river which was opened in 1859 [1] by the North Eastern Railway [2] (and acquired by the Tyne Improvement Commission in 1938) to handle Tyneside's coal exports. Opened in 1859 by the North Eastern Railway, Tyne Dock was built to accommodate and ship the great and increasing quantities of coal brought to South Shields on the company's rail lines, with which the riverside staiths had been unable to cope. It was for a time the United Kingdom's busiest coaling facility.
Today, Tyne Dock is best-known as the birthplace of the novelist Catherine Cookson who was born Catherine McMullen at Number 5 Leam Lane, Tyne Dock on June 20, 1906. She was born to an unmarried mother, Kate Fawcett, which made Catherine’s tough dockside upbringing all the more difficult.
