God is pictured as feeding the hungry. “He has filled the hungry with good things,” Mary sings ( Luke 1:53 ). “He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry,” the psalmist sings ( Psalm 146:7 ).
Dec 3, 2015 · To feed the hungry includes food donations to the local food shelf, volunteer work at a soup kitchen or packaging meals, the distribution of dinners through programs like Meals On Wheels, food baskets at Thanksgiving or Christmas, or monetary donations to relief agencies.
On the surface at least, feeding the hungry seems fairly straightforward. We can help the hungry in simple ways: for example, by making donations to the local food bank or, if we have the time, by helping at a local soup kitchen for the homeless.
We fail when we forget that we are called to actually feed the hungry. Even when we don’t know how to begin, the voice of Jesus says, “you give them something to eat.” (Mark 6:37; Matthew 14:16; Luke 10:13)
Jesus specifically names feeding the hungry as one of these corporal works of mercy. • Throughout these three sessions, we will reflect on the issue of hunger, how it connects to our faith, and how we might be called to respond individually and as a community to feed the hungry around the world.
Feed the hungry. There are many people in this world who go without food. When so much of our food goes to waste, consider how good stewardship practices of your own food habits can benefit others who do not have those same resources. Having delicious food at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner?
