Münster is situated on the river Aa, approximately 15 kilometres (9 miles) south of its confluence with the Ems in the so-called Westphalian Bight, a landscape studded with dispersed settlements and farms – the "Münsterland".

Jun 19, 2024 · Münster, city, North Rhine–Westphalia Land (state), western Germany. It lies on the small Münster-Aa River and the Dortmund-Ems Canal, northeast of Essen. The community was first mentioned as Mimigernaford (“Ford over the Aa”) when Liudger (Ludger), a missionary sent by Charlemagne, founded a bishopric there in 804.
Since Westphalia was merged into the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Münster has lost its capital role to Düsseldorf, but the city of just over 300,000 inhabitants still hosts several administrative institutions, courts of justice, insurance and trade companies and, first and foremost, educational institutes.
