With the earliest English settlement in 1635, Mathews County is rich in historical landmarks–buildings, churches, estates, cemeteries – including a Courthouse, circa 1834, still in use today, centuries-old gravesites, a haunted house, and the Tabernacle, one of the last remaining outdoor pavilions for religious use.
With only 94 square miles of land, Mathews is one of the smallest of Virginia’s counties. It was originally delineated circa 1651 as Kingston Parish within neighboring Gloucester County.
