Edmond (or Edmund) Halley FRS (/ ˈ h æ l i /; 8 November [O.S. 29 October] 1656 – 25 January 1742 [O.S. 14 January 1741]) was an English astronomer, mathematician and physicist. He was the second Astronomer Royal in Britain, succeeding John Flamsteed in 1720.

Halley's Comet is the only known short-period comet that is consistently visible to the naked eye from Earth, appearing every 72–80 years. It last appeared in the inner parts of the Solar System in 1986 and will next appear in mid-2061. Officially designated 1P/Halley, it is also commonly called Comet Halley, or sometimes simply Halley.
May 29, 2018 · Halley and his wife had three children: Katherine and Margaret, born probably in 1688, and a son, Edmond, born in 1698. The daughters survived their father but young Edmond, a naval surgeon, predeceased his father by one year; Halley’s wife died five years earlier, in 1736.
