Yōsuke Matsuoka (松岡 洋右, Matsuoka Yōsuke, March 4, 1880 – June 27, 1946) was a Japanese diplomat and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Empire of Japan during the early stages of World War II.
Foreign Minister Matsuoka Yosuke was taken aback by the German invasion of the U.S.S.R. in June 1941 and lost his position after an unsuccessful attempt to persuade his government to join in the German attack.
Diplomat and statesman. Born in Yamaguchi. He went to the United States at the age of 13, and graduated from Oregon State University with difficulty. Returning to Japan, Matsuoka became a diplomat, and served in many countries including China, Russia, and the United States.
