Of poor but noble birth, Nikolai Rezanov was close to members of the court of Emperor Alexander I and became an influential figure in the first decade of Russia's American colony.
After a few weeks Rezanov sailed away with the supplies and a proposed trade treaty, with a promise to return. But he died in Siberia on his way to St Petersburg. Concepción never married and eventually became a nun.
