Tenskwatawa (/ ˌ t ə n s k w ɒ t ɒ w eɪ /; also called Tenskatawa, Tenskwatawah, Tensquatawa or Lalawethika) (January 1775 – November 1836) was a Native American religious and political leader of the Shawnee tribe, known as the Prophet or the Shawnee Prophet.
Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa. The Shawnee brothers Tecumseh, a highly respected Indian leader, and Tenskwatawa (originally named Lalawethika), a religious visionary, led the most widespread and coordinated Native American resistance against the advancing white settlers and armies in the history of the United States.
As a youth, Tenskwatawa lacked the physical abilities of his older siblings, including his brother Tecumseh, the great leader and warrior. Tenskwatawa was so unskilled with weapons that he blinded himself in the right eye with a wayward arrow.
Originally born Lalawethika, meaning “the rattle” in Algonquian, Tenskwatawa was a unique individual living on the fringe of Shawnee society. At the young age of four his mother abandoned him and his siblings, leaving them alone and in the care of older tribesmen.
The Prophet was a North American Indian religious revivalist of the Shawnee people, who worked with his brother Tecumseh to create a pan-tribal confederacy to resist U.S. encroachment in the Northwest Territory. The Prophet’s declaration in 1805 that he had a message from the “Master of Life,”.
