Semyon Ivanov Dezhnyov (born c. 1605, Veliky Ustyug, Russia—died early 1673, Moscow) was a Russian explorer, the first European known to have sailed through the Bering Strait. Dezhnyov served as a Cossack in Siberia, where he traveled a great deal in the north beginning in the early 1640s.
