James FitzJames Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde, KG (1665–1745) was an Irish statesman and soldier. He was the third of the Kilcash branch of the family to inherit the earldom of Ormond. Like his grandfather, the 1st Duke, he was raised as a Protestant, unlike his extended family who held to Roman Catholicism.

Butler, James, 2nd Duke of Ormond, son of preceding, born in Dublin Castle, 29th April 1665, was, with his brother and sisters, brought up by his grandfather, the great Duke. He was educated in France and at Oxford. When but seventeen, he married a daughter of Lord Hyde, and was left a widower at twenty.

A Tory statesman holding important military office and political positions during the reigns of William and Mary and Queen Anne, Ormond was a key figure in helping the exiled Jacobite court achieve their restoration at Queen Anne's death. On his accession, George I effectively banned the Tory party from government.
