The Basilisks is the debut film of director and writer Lina Wertmüller, who follows the lives of three unemployed young men in a poor village. The film features Ennio Morricone's music, Gianni di Venanzio's cinematography, and a young Antonio Petruzzi as one of the protagonists.

An underseen neorealist film, with a terrific (and well used) Morricone score, about class divide and social stagnation in Southern Italy. The characters, who uniformly feel very real, try to surpass their setting but are stuck in the purgatorial. It is a film of striving, of people forever stuck by circumstance.
