Diva is a 1981 French thriller film directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix, adapted from the novel Diva by Daniel Odier. It eschewed the realist mood of the 1970s French cinema and instead adopted a colourful, melodic style, later described as cinéma du look.

Eighteen year-old Jules, an opera buff and post office worker, makes a pirate tape of the celebrated diva Cynthia Hawkins who flatly refuses to be recorded. The next day, just before being murdered, a prostitute slips a cassette revealing a scandalous illicit business into the bag on his moped.
A young opera-loving mailman, Jules, becomes inadvertently entangled in murder, when a young woman fleeing two mob hit men drops an incriminating cassette into his mailbag. Jules has just recently recorded opera star Cynthia Hawkins' latest concert, something of a coup as Hawkins refuses to make recordings of any kind.
Overview. Jules, a young Parisian postman, secretly records a concert performance given by the opera singer Cynthia Hawkins, whom he idolises.
