In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Helios ( / ˈhiːliəs, - ɒs /; Ancient Greek: Ἥλιος pronounced [hɛ̌ːlios], lit. 'Sun'; Homeric Greek: Ἠέλιος) is the god who personifies the Sun. His name is also Latinized as Helius, and he is often given the epithets Hyperion ("the one above") and Phaethon ("the shining").
As the sun god, Helios would make a daily journey across the sky. Four horses, Aethon, Pyrois, Phlegon and Eous, drew his chariot. Each morning, his sister, Eos, would paint the dawn sky with her fingers and pull the misty curtain, through which Helios would appear, aside.
Helios, the Greek god of the sun, was the only son of the Titans Hyperion (“The High One”) and Theia (“divine”; sometimes also called Euryphaessa, the “wide-shining”). The couple had two daughters as well: “rich-tressed” Selene and “rosy-armed” Eos, who represent, respectively and appropriately, the Moon and the Dawn. Who were Zeus’ Lovers?
