Dante Alighieri (Italian: [ˈdante aliˈɡjɛːri]; c. May 1265 – September 14, 1321), most likely baptized Durante di Alighiero degli Alighieri and often referred to as Dante (English: / ˈ d ɑː n t eɪ, ˈ d æ n t eɪ, ˈ d æ n t i /, US: / ˈ d ɑː n t i /), was an Italian poet, writer, and philosopher.
Dante encounters Fra Alberigo, one of the Jovial Friars and a native of Faenza, who asks Dante to remove the visor of ice from his eyes. In 1285, Alberigo invited his opponents, Manfred (his brother) and Alberghetto (Manfred's son), to a banquet at which his men murdered the dinner guests.
