Emmanuel College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. The college was founded in 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay, Chancellor of the Exchequer to Elizabeth I. The site on which the college sits was once a priory for Dominican monks, and the College Hall is built on the foundations of the monastery's nave.
In the seventeenth century, around 30 Emmanuel graduates went into 'exile' in America to avoid persecution from more orthodox religious policy. Cambridge in Massachusetts was named in compliment to an Emmanuel preacher Thomas Shepherd. Another, John Harvard (BA 1632) emigrated in 1637.

Emmanuel College was founded by Sir Walter Mildmay, chancellor of the exchequer to Queen Elizabeth I, on the site of a thirteenth-century Dominican Priory. It admitted its first students in November 1584, and by April 1585 there were more than 25 undergraduates in residence.
From there he studied law briefly, and then studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he received an M.A. in 1613. Following his ordination, he was the chaplain for some prominent families for a few years, before being installed as pastor in his home town of Sudbury.
